The Monkey Sanctuary in Cornwall has been the home to a colony of woolly monkeys since 1964. Its original aim was to provide a stable setting in which woolly monkeys, rescued from lives of isolation in zoos or as pets, could live as naturally as possible. The Sanctuary has received world-wide recognition as the first place where this beautiful primate has survived and bred successfully in captivity. Their descendants form the colony today. The Monkey Sanctuary provides advice and support for primate rescue centres around the world. Closer to home we are working to rehabilitate captive monkeys in Britain who still desperately need a safe and socially stimulating environment. The Monkey Sanctuary is a co-operative company owned and run by an experienced team of keepers assisted by volunteers. Each year the Sanctuary educates thousands of visitors on monkey life in the wild and in captivity, on the ethics and problems of captivity, about ideas for rehabilitation as well as other animal welfare and conservation issues.
